Janet Simmonds (nee Panagakis) is a British-born tour guide, writer and company director. Born in Liverpool with a slightly Greek grand-father and a very Greek great grand-father she has a special affinity with the Mediterranean, especially Italy and Greece. Trained as a Geographer and Art Historian at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester, Janet has spent most of her adult life running specialist travel companies and travelling extensively. Several times a year she leads small groups to different parts of the Mediterranean. She writes about her travels and observations.

Rediscover Florence, Pistoia and other towns in Tuscany with the fabulous wine windows ‘bucchette di vino’ as your guide. These small doors or windows were used centuries ago to sell wine to passers by. Many of the palaces in the centre of Florence owned vineyards in the countryside. They’d sell wine to neighbours and locals direct from the wine cellar through this small window. Trieste and Miramare - starting to prepare for an April trip to north-east Italy. Starting in Trieste (port city and border town) then moving on to Venice for an in-depth set of events with local artisans; paper-maker, mask maker, jewellery creators, fabric weavers and art restoration experts. The history of this area is wonderful - Trieste was an Austrian city for hundreds of years. The coffee culture is simple to Vienna. The coffee houses are often book shops too. James Joyce loved it here and the ideas of Sigmund Freud were popular here too. Spectacular art, fascinating history and a good ol’ dollop of Habsburg history for good measure!
