Janet Simmonds (nee Panagakis) is a British-born tour guide, writer and company director. Born in Liverpool with a slightly Greek grand-father and a very Greek great grand-father she has a special affinity with the Mediterranean, especially Italy and Greece. Trained as a Geographer and Art Historian at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester, Janet has spent most of her adult life running specialist travel companies and travelling extensively. Several times a year she leads small groups to different parts of the Mediterranean. She writes about her travels and observations.

Inspirational artist and sculptor @lorenzoquinnartist first came to my attention with his fantastic and highly accurate ‘Support’ sculpture - two giant white hands ‘supporting’ the facade of @ca_sagredo_venice - a historic palace in Venice. We all know about Venice’s precarious relationship with water - sinking, flooding, eroding - we are all keenly aware. And yet yesterday was the worst flooding the city has seen since 1966. Still the flood defences remain unbuilt! The MOSE project is a national embarrassment. I thought this photo of Lorenzo’s Building Bridges (ruthlessly sidelined by the Venetian authorities) is positioned next to the MOSE barge - the irony. With the current #acquaalta it’s never been more urgent to complete the lagoon defences #NOW @luigibrugnaro @veneziaunica @detourismvenezia This is important - the time is now. Lido di Venezia this morning - after last night’s huge storm, high winds (127 km/hr), rough seas and very high tide. Extensive flooding in Venice, especially San Marco, Riva Schiavoni. On Lido the sand barrier created by bulldozers to protect the beach and the beach huts has been destroyed. The vaporetto stop on Lido is damaged and ‘fuori servizio’ there’s flooding at embarcadero. Water levels very, very high. There’s always someone who benefits - take a look at the idiot surfer!!! So where exactly is MOSE and why isn’t it finished!!!
