Janet Simmonds (nee Panagakis) is a British-born tour guide, writer and company director. Born in Liverpool with a slightly Greek grand-father and a very Greek great grand-father she has a special affinity with the Mediterranean, especially Italy and Greece. Trained as a Geographer and Art Historian at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester, Janet has spent most of her adult life running specialist travel companies and travelling extensively. Several times a year she leads small groups to different parts of the Mediterranean. She writes about her travels and observations.

This morning on the Lido, Venice. Waves rolling in from the Adriatic, blue sky, golden sand. The looming bulk of Hotel Excelsior in the background. A landmark luxury hotel, filled to the rafters each September with actors, producers and film makers, who flock here for the Venice Film Festival. A Moorish palace of minarets, cupolas and elaborate, marble halls. A Victorian palace on the edge of the beach. There’s api vans on the Lido. Numerous little scooter trucks, known as ‘api’ bee because of the buzzing of the tiny little motor. As the sun sets I’m thinking of Byron, Ruskin and Hemingway. A city of unique splendour, a watery melange of land, sea and surf. Boats, boats everywhere - and a city of sublime beauty.
