Janet Simmonds (nee Panagakis) is a British-born tour guide, writer and company director. Born in Liverpool with a slightly Greek grand-father and a very Greek great grand-father she has a special affinity with the Mediterranean, especially Italy and Greece. Trained as a Geographer and Art Historian at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester, Janet has spent most of her adult life running specialist travel companies and travelling extensively. Several times a year she leads small groups to different parts of the Mediterranean. She writes about her travels and observations.

Sunny blue skies in London - Changing of the Guard 💂‍♀️ Buckingham Palace, Queen’s Gallery for a fantastic ‘masterpieces’ exhibition including #Rembrandt #Rubens #Titian #Canaletto #Vermeer inspiration by the bucket load for #grandtourists and #travellers alike. The art collections of London were often started by English men travelling in Europe especially Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. Whilst travelling they bought lots of souvenirs, sculptures, paintings and tapestries. HM The Queen has a vast collection of Canaletto paintings thanks to George III who purchased Joseph Smith’s entire collection - whilst in Venice in the 1760s. Smith was the British Counsel in Venice and an early supporter of Canaletto. During his working career #Canaletto painted more than 500 canvases (many are views of Venice). Inspired by a fantastic painting by Lorenzo Lotto, I journeyed in my mind from Venice to Loreto where this amazing artist lived and died. An exceptional talent - the painting ‘Madonna del Rosario’ is to found in Cingoli (Balcone delle Marche). A delightful town in Italy’s Marche region. The Rosario painting is exceptional in many ways. The tree of life behind Mary depicts events from her life, joy, sorrow and miracle (relating to the life of Jesus). There’s humour too in the paintings - look closely…. At this time of the year in Venice the bakeries and pastry shops are filled to overflowing with large, colourful biscuits (or cookies) depicting a man on a horse. A shortbread type base is loaded with chocolate coins, silver balls, multi-coloured icing. The man is San Martino, an early Christian saint who became Bishop of Tours in France. In Venice these days of early November are often calm and peaceful with beautiful light reflecting from the lagoon - the Venetians call these days ‘i giorni di San Martino’ our equivalent of an Indian summer….especially for Francesca Blench and Mary Lou Peters (who loves any kind of dessert)….. Lulu Simmonds San Martino is remembered at Hochster Castle just outside Frankfurt as well as Tours in France.
